No hero can spend the eternity without his princess. Imagine Aladdin having all of his adventures without Jasmine's existence. It doesn't work, right? Something will always miss, despite his friends.
It's the same even with kids (especially since Peter and Wendy are around 13). Just because it's very rare children find their true love, it doesn't mean it's impossible. And as we're talking about fairytales it's even more possible. Take Taran and Eilonwy. They're not much older.
As I said: No hero. Even the famous cocky boy, Peter Pan needs his blue eyed princess to be fully happy.
